IRTAD Road Safety Database

The IRTAD database contains validated, up-to-date crash and exposure data from 35 countries: The International Road Traffic and Accident Database (IRTAD) includes safety and traffic data, aggregated by country and year from 1970. All data is collected directly from relevant national data providers in the IRTAD countries. It is provided in a common format, based on definitions developed and agreed by the IRTAD Group. Access is via the OECD statistics portal.

Crash data: Fatalities, injury crashes, hospitalised, injuries by:

  • road type (motorways, urban roads, rural roads)
  • road user (pedestrians, cyclists, car occupants, PTWs, others)
  • age
  • gender
  • seat position in the car.

Exposure data:

  • vehicle-kilometres
  • modal split
  • vehicle fleet, by type of vehicles
  • population
  • driving licences.

Other safety data:

  • seatbelt wearing rates
  • helmet wearing rates.


The countries contributing data are: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States.

Selected data is available for free; full online access requires IRTAD membership. Latest data are also published in book format in the IRTAD Road Safety Annual Reports.
