Transport and Covid-19: responses and resources

COP26 Side Event: Decarbonising Transport Now – How decarbonised transport will achieve the Paris Agreement goal

16.30 to 18.00 CET

The transport sector accounts for 24% of the global energy-related CO₂ emissions (IEA 2020). Rapid economic growth combined with ongoing urbanisation and increasing motorisation will lead to a worldwide increase in traffic. Therefore, the transition to a decarbonisation path for the transport sector is essential to achieve the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement to 2050. COP26 will showcase that decarbonising transport is necessary and possible. The NDC TIA project and others organise this hybrid event in the German Pavilion at COP26 in Glasgow. After demonstrating real scenarios and interventions in the transport sector for reaching the 1.5 degrees Celsius limit goal by background studies, country representatives from Colombia, India and Uganda, and the German Ministries BMU and BMZ, will showcase approaches to decarbonising the transport sector for effective climate change mitigation. The participants will also debate the possibilities and challenges for raising ambitions through NDC in the transport sector.
