Chilean Presidency Issues Statements on Maritime Climate Action and Decarbonisation Strategies

Chile, holder of the Presidency of the International Transport Forum (ITF) in 2024-25, has issued two statements in support of maritime climate action and about the adoption of comprehensive decarbonisation strategies in transport at the ITF Summit in Leipzig, Germany.

Ministers from the 69 member countries of the ITF gathered in Leipzig for their Annual Summit from 21-23 May. The theme of the three-day Summit was “Transport Resilience to Global Shocks”.

Chile Presidency Statement in Support of Maritime Climate Action

In its statement in support of maritime climate action, the Chilean Presidency supports the outcome achieved during 83 Maritime Environment Protection Committee by approving the draft amendments to Annex VI of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) on the IMO net-zero framework that considers a mandatory marine fuel standard and a greenhouse gas emissions pricing mechanism for shipping to address climate change. The Statement encourages all member countries of the International Transport Forum and the International Maritime Organization to support the adoption of the aforementioned draft regulations at the next extraordinary session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee to be held in October 2025.

Chile Presidency Statement about the Adoption of Comprehensive Decarbonisation Strategies in Transport

In its statement on comprehensive decarbonisation strategies in transport, the Chilean Presidency support the adoption of comprehensive decarbonisation strategies, including a range of policies and pathways, such as:

  • Shifting towards clean vehicle fleets, relying on sustainable fuels and electrification and promoting energy efficiency of the transport sector.
  • Scaling up the production of sustainable fuels using renewable energy resources.
  • Combining transport demand management, land-use planning and a shift towards less carbon-intensive modes, including public transport, walking and cycling.
  • Adopting measures to adapt and ensure transport system resilience to climate shocks.
